Congress extends tax cut, jobless benefits

(EFE).- The U.S. Congress approved on Friday a 10-month extension of the payroll tax cut and federal unemployment benefits.

The bipartisan measure, which passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 293-132 and prevailed in the Senate by 60 votes to 36, goes now to President Barack Obama, who is expected to sign the bill as soon as he returns to Washington from campaign events on the West Coast.

Codelco's share of Chile copper output higher in 2011

(EFE).- State-owned mining giant Codelco produced 1.74 million metric tons of copper last year, or 33.1 percent of Chile's total output of the red metal.

According to figures released by the state-run Chilean Copper Commission, or Cochilco, that total is sharply higher than the 1.4 million metric tons Codelco produced in 2008, when it accounted for 27.5 percent of the total.

Undocumented New Mexicans can still get driver's licenses

Tucson, Arizona, Feb 17 (EFE).- Undocumented immigrants in New Mexico still have the right to get driver's licenses, after Republican Gov. Susana Martinez failed for a third time to repeal the 2003 law authorizing the issuance of licenses to people without Social Security numbers.

The state legislature ended its session Thursday rejecting a bill to undo the 2003 measure.

Jobless claims at lowest level in nearly 4 years

Washington, Feb 16 (EFE).- The number of people filing applications for unemployment benefits fell last week by 13,000 to 348,000, their lowest level since March 2008, the U.S. Labor Department said Thursday.

The rolling four-week average of unemployment claims, which is thought to better reflect underlying trends, dropped 1,750 to 365,000.
